Tulsa Business and Professional Women’s Foundation

Just after World War I, federal officials were interested in learning more about the potential female labor force in the United States. As a result, the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs (BPW/USA) was established in 1919, and the Tulsa Chapter of the organization (Tulsa Business and Professional Women or Tulsa BPW) was established the same year. For decades, these organizations have provided advocacy and support for working women and their families.

The Business and Professional Women’s Foundation was established in 1956 to provide research, information, career development programs and scholarships for working women. It was the first foundation of its kind to focus on the needs of women.

Both the Tulsa BPW and BPW/USA have campaigned for the passage of key legislation favorable to working women, including the Equal Rights Amendment, Title IX, the Equal Pay Act, and a law allowing federal income-tax deductions for the care of dependent children, as well as Oklahoma legislation allowing women to hold statewide political offices and to serve on juries. The Tulsa BPW also has supported Domestic Violence Intervention Services and sponsored career planning workshops for teenagers and adult women, as well as scholarships and low-interest loan programs for women returning to school.

In 2017, the Tulsa Business and Professional Women’s Foundation (also known as Career Advocates of Tulsa Foundation, Inc.) wished to provide scholarship opportunities for highly motivated female students at The University of Tulsa, and the organization funded the Tulsa Business and Professional Women’s Foundation Scholarship Endowment Fund. The University of Tulsa is deeply grateful for this important scholarship fund that promotes opportunity at TU while sustaining the philanthropic legacy of the Tulsa Business and Professional Women’s Foundation.
