Joseph Brien Vaughn

Joseph “Brien” Vaughn says he met the love of his life in 1991, but that it took 12 years of courtship for Dolly Vaughn to agree to marriage. They did marry in 2003, and together they raised Dolly’s grandson, Bishop Brumit. Dolly was smart and energetic, and with Brien’s support and encouragement, she earned a BS degree in MIS/IT from the University of Oklahoma in 1996 at the age of 45, making her a first-generation college graduate.

Dolly launched her career and worked for three companies before settling at WPX, a company that treated her very well, especially after she became ill with a rare form of cancer. Dolly succumbed to cancer in October of 2016 at the age of 65, and Brien continues to treasure his memories of her and the exceptional life she led.

Brien is a proud alumnus of The University of Tulsa, who earned a BS in Management in 1975, and he later earned an MBA from Baylor University. Brien pursued a career in Information Technology, working for Chevron, PennWell, Oklahoma Surgical Hospital, and finally for The University of Tulsa, where he worked as an Enterprise SQL Database Administrator until his retirement in 2018.

Also in 2018, Brien Vaughn wished to honor the memory of his beloved wife by establishing a scholarship in her name at The University of Tulsa. The Dolly Vaughn Memorial Scholarship in Business Endowment Fund is dedicated to supporting students enrolled in the Collins College of Business who are first-generation college students, like his wife. Brien’s caring generosity will create important opportunities for TU’s Dolly Vaughn Business Scholars for many years to come.
