James W. Bishop, Jr.

Some of life’s best memories are formed during college. James W. “Jim” Bishop Jr. (BS ’77, Economics) is one TU alumnus who can say this with certainty.

Jim’s undergraduate years at The University of Tulsa were filled with positive experiences. He recalls excellent teachers, first-rate coaching, and enduring friendships formed through his involvement in intercollegiate athletics and other campus activities. A basketball letterman, Jim experienced the camaraderie only a close-knit team can provide.

After graduation, Jim launched a successful career that culminated with his position as Vice President for Administration at Tulsa’s longtime oil and gas giant, Helmerich & Payne, from which he is now retired.

Jim has maintained a close relationship with his alma mater through the years. A lifetime member of the TU Letterwinner’s Association, he has volunteered his time and talent by serving on its board of directors.

Jim has also demonstrated his loyalty to The University of Tulsa through numerous gifts, dating back to 1994 and strengthening both athletics and academics, including the James W. “Jim” Bishop, Jr. Endowed Scholarship for Student-Athletes, a scholarship program for TU’s deserving and hardworking student-athletes, which he established in 2011.

In 2019, Jim Bishop decided to strengthen his commitment to his alma mater once again by establishing the James W. Bishop, Jr. Scholarship Endowment Funds for Athletics and the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences. An estate gift will fund these two endowments, which will provide scholarships to student-athletes and to students in the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences.

Due to Jim Bishop’s extraordinary philanthropy and dedicated service, The University of Tulsa has recognized him as a member of the esteemed Circle Society, Chapman Legacy Society, and President’s Council.

The University of Tulsa and TU Athletics sincerely appreciate Jim Bishop’s generous and caring partnership, which is creating important opportunities for students, helping them to pursue their degrees and build happy memories of their own on TU’s campus.
