TU alumnus James H. Kerby (BS 1963, Print/Broadcast Journalism; BA 1963, Religion) and his wife, Mary E. Kerby, were devoted supporters of The University of Tulsa, and in 1998, they decided to ensure that their philanthropic support would continue for generations to come. “We wanted to invest in something meaningful — something that would outlive both of us and make a real impact,” said Mrs. Kerby.
James and Mary Kerby named The University of Tulsa as the beneficiary of a Unitrust they had established, creating the James H. and Mary E. Kerby Endowment Fund. They designated the future earnings of their endowment to be used at the discretion of the University President, with preference given to annual operating expenses.
Mr. Kerby earned his TU degrees while balancing the responsibilities of marriage and fatherhood, and he went on to build a successful career as the owner of BMC Advertising in Tulsa, providing advertising, public relations, and business planning services for religious organizations. He and Mary lovingly raised their children and doted on their grandchildren. Mr. Kerby passed away in 2007, and Mary Kerby passed away in 2020. They left behind many memories for their family of lives well lived.
Mr. Kerby told others he benefited immensely from his TU education and that he wanted to give something back to his alma mater. The University of Tulsa is deeply grateful to James and Mary Kerby for their generosity and foresight, which will result in countless opportunities for TU students for many years.
