Austin Wayne Cox had two strong connections to The University of Tulsa – he attended the University School on TU’s campus as a youngster, and he later chose TU for his higher education studies, graduating in 2012 with a dual degree in energy management and finance. His choice was not surprising for his family because he loved Golden Hurricane Athletics, becoming an instant fan when he arrived on campus for middle school. While he was a TU student, he enjoyed participating in campus activities, including Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Cox’s family said he loved music from his earliest days, performing music shows for his family as a youngster, participating in school musical theater productions, playing trumpet and guitar in bands through middle school, high school, college and beyond, and even participating in the Battle of the Bands in Cain’s Ballroom while he was a student at the Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences.
Austin Cox launched a fulfilling career in energy management after graduating from TU, working for BHP in Houston, Texas, as a lease analyst, enjoying his work and his colleagues. While accomplishing so much, Austin Cox tragically passed away in 2018 at the age of 29.
Austin’s family described him as authentic, compassionate and intelligent, with a great sense of humor. They said he was able to perform one final act of generosity by donating his organs to three patients in need.
Cox’s family honored his legacy by creating a permanent source of support for business students at The University of Tulsa, known as the Austin W. Cox Memorial Endowed Scholarship for the Collins College of Business.
The University of Tulsa is grateful for this namesake scholarship fund, which will extend the caring legacy of Austin Cox in perpetuity by supporting those students following in his footsteps toward fulfilling careers in business.
