Family and Friends of Susan Whalen

Virginia “Susan” Danowski Whalen (BS ’84, MA ’87) graduated from The University of Tulsa with an undergraduate degree in business administration and a master’s degree in anthropology. She was in the process of computerizing the archeological site database for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, when she passed away in January of 1988 at the age of 37. She also was collaborating on the analysis of southwestern artifacts from excavations in western Texas.

Her parents, the late Thomas Danowski and the late Virginia Danowski, established an endowment fund in her memory in 2005, which provides supplemental funding for the Henry Kendall College of Arts and Sciences, to be used for scholarships, equipment, or other educational purposes. This fund is formally known as the Virginia Susan Danowski Whalen Memorial Endowment Fund in Arts and Sciences.

Her husband, TU Professor of Anthropology Michael Whalen (now professor emeritus), raised funds to establish a student anthropology award in her honor in 1988, and this fund is known as the Virginia Susan Danowski Whalen Memorial Award in Anthropology Endowment Fund.

The University of Tulsa is grateful to the family and friends of Virginia Susan Danowski Whalen for their efforts to sustain her legacy at TU by providing financial support and academic resources for the students who are following in her footsteps.
