Ralph J. Kaufmann came to TU in 1928 and established the Chemistry Department in a basement laboratory. During his chairmanship, the faculty grew from one to six, and the Department became the second in the Southwest to be accredited by the American Chemical Society. Kaufmann’s work and personality influenced generations of students. He retired in 1962.
