Dr. Claude A. Levengood joined The University of Tulsa community in 1937 as an Assistant Professor of Zoology. He later became the chair of the Department of Zoology, and then was named the inaugural chair of the Life Sciences Department when that unit was created in 1958.
Levengood was a native of Boyerstown, Pennsylvania, who earned his MS and PhD degrees from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Dr. Levengood was well-liked by his students and faculty colleagues, and he was named TU’s “Mr. Homecoming” in 1973, one of the university’s highest honors.
He died suddenly in 1975 at the age of 64, leaving the TU community in mourning. Family, friends, students, and colleagues helped create a scholarship fund in his honor, which is known as the C. A. Levengood Memorial Scholarship for Biology.
This need- and merit-based scholarship program was designated for upperclassmen who were majoring in a health-related life sciences field.
The University of Tulsa is grateful to those who wished to honor this distinguished faculty member by creating a source of support for deserving students.
