Dorothy M. and George T. Gibson

The road was happy, but not exactly easy, for the young married couple George and Dorothy “Dottie” Gibson. They worked hard, with George attending classes and working several jobs simultaneously. They succeeded, but the austerity of their early years played a large part in later inspiring them to set up a permanent scholarship endowment to help promising engineering students with financial needs.

George, a 1955 TU mathematics graduate, is a member of TU’s Engineering Hall of Fame. He has been a loyal supporter of his alma mater since 1989.

During his 35 years with Southwestern Bell’s Oklahoma division, George held a variety of positions, including chief engineer for Oklahoma, before retiring as assistant to the president. More broadly, he has served the engineering and surveying professions with great distinction as an expert in licensure, examination, continuing professional education, and curriculum assessment. He has served in several roles with the Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, including Secretary, Vice Chair, and Chair. He also served as president of the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers (1979-80) and chaired the Oklahoma Engineering Foundation. He has served the NCEES (National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying), advising on assessment and accreditation issues, and in 2005, he was awarded the NCEES Distinguished Service Award.

George lost his beloved wife, Dottie, in 2015, but the endowment they established will continue to support deserving and talented engineering students for generations to come.
