M. Hart and Dorothy “Dot” A. Hix loved to help others achieve their goals, and they hoped their planned gift to benefit students at TU would do just that.
Loyal and longstanding advocates of The University of Tulsa, Dot (BA ’72, Sociology and BSN ’76) and Hart (BS ’41) generously supported a variety of programs and projects at TU throughout their lives, including the Dorothy Hix Scholarship in Nursing, the School of Nursing Annual Fund, TU Athletics, the Collins College of Business, the Carl I. Duncan Scholarship for Lambda Chi Alpha, McFarlin Library, and KWGS. After his retirement, Hart refurbished some of the stained-glass windows from TU’s original Kendall Hall, which then became a treasured part of the TU Heritage Collection. Hart was awarded the J. Paschal Twyman Award in 2003 in appreciation for his many contributions of time, talent and financial resources to the university.
Dot raised her children before pursuing her TU degrees, and then she launched a fulfilling career as a psychiatric nurse. She worked in several hospitals in the Tulsa area, before retiring at the age of 80. Those who knew her said her three great loves were Hart, The University of Tulsa, and her gardens.
Hart earned a business degree at TU and served in the U. S. Army in World War II, before starting a 30-year career at Shell Oil Company, from which he retired in 1971 as a Systems Analyst. He then entered the homebuilding sector in Tulsa, eventually owning his own luxury homebuilding and design company, Hart Hix, Inc. After his second retirement in 1985, Hart continued to help others with home remodeling and repair work and did extensive work at TU’s Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house. Hart was a proud alumnus of the fraternity.
Hart Hix died in 2007, and Dot passed away in 2009. In 1995, they had created a provision in their will to support The University of Tulsa. The TU community fondly remembers these dear friends and loyal alumni, who made a difference in the lives of so many.
