There is something rewarding about contributing financially to a sport or activity about which one feels passionate. This was the case for Doris Kennedy Catlett and her husband W. Fitzhugh Catlett, or W. F. This generous couple greatly enjoyed the sport of golf, and The University of Tulsa’s Women’s Golf Team has long benefitted from Doris Catlett’s thoughtful early focus on supporting the award-winning team.
The TU Women’s Golf program has a long and proud history. Established in 1974, the team has won multiple national championships. The team’s first coach, the late Dale McNamara, was a seven-time state amateur champion. Coach McNamara propelled the team to much success, and no one was more excited about or supportive of the program than Doris Catlett.
Doris Kennedy Catlett was born in 1901 in Tulsa. In 1923, at the age of 22, she married W. F., who was born in 1895 in what would later become the state of Oklahoma. During World War I, W. F. served for two years in the United States Army. He went on to become a successful oil producer, owning his own company in Tulsa for many years.
W. F. died in April of 1973 and Doris in December of 1992.
Doris Catlett’s caring support of the TU Women’s Golf Team is sustained by the significant trust that bears her name and that of her husband. The TU family is deeply grateful for this perpetual source of support for its deserving student-athletes on the Women’s Golf Team.
