Dale and Jane Kucko

Jane Kucko is a strong advocate of global education for college students, knowing that international study illuminates the challenges and issues that both developing and developed nations must address in the 21st century. Curiosity about the world beyond her hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska, led to Kucko’s first trip abroad to Western Europe in 1984. This experience inspired her to seek ways to learn more about the world and its many different cultures and viewpoints.

In fact, Jane Kucko, Ph.D., has made global education her career, and she worked as vice provost for global education at The University of Tulsa from 2016 until 2020, directing efforts to help students develop global perspective, cross-cultural competencies, and appreciation of the world’s many cultures.

Jane Kucko began her work at TU following a longstanding career at Texas Christian University, where she directed the Center for International Studies, served as associate dean of university programs, and helped lead the campus-wide Discovering Global Citizenship initiative.

One of Dr. Kucko’s key achievements at TU was establishing the Jumpstart TU program, an intensive summer learning-abroad experience for incoming freshmen, designed to engage students right away in global study and to build a sense of community going into the freshman year. The program features eight days in Panama and field study with experts in sustainability, land management, water, transportation, social justice, education and women’s and gender issues. Jumpstart TU has been successful at significantly boosting retention rates for its participants and encouraging participation by students identified as members of minority groups.

In 2019, Jane Kucko and her husband, Dale, decided to fund an endowment to promote global learning at The University of Tulsa: The Dale and Jane Kucko Endowment for Global Education. This namesake endowment provides scholarship support for the Jumpstart TU program and operating support for the Center for Global Engagement (formerly the Center for Global Studies).

The couple is now retired, but their commitment to global studies at The University of Tulsa is sustained by their endowment fund. Many fortunate TU students will benefit from study-abroad experiences thanks to the generosity of Jane and Dale Kucko.
