Charlotte D. and Robert E. Carlile

Dr. Robert Elliott Carlile’s professional life incorporated several different facets of the petroleum industry, and he continues to serve that industry today by generously assisting future leaders at his alma mater, The University of Tulsa.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in petroleum engineering from TU in 1958 and 1960, respectively, and earned his doctorate in petroleum engineering from Texas A&M University. He spent 21 years making a name for himself in the oil and gas industry and an additional 21 years accrediting and teaching at petroleum engineering programs across the nation. This phase of his career included teaching at Louisiana Tech University, Texas A&M, and the University of Missouri – Rolla. He retired as the chairman of the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas Tech University.

Carlile retired from a distinguished academic career, but not one to rest on his laurels, he returned to Tulsa, where he owned and operated six Jiffy Lube franchises.

His fondness for travel took him to 42 countries, and his vast oil and gas experience brought him numerous accolades. He was a lifetime member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and received its Legion of Honor Award for 50 years of continuous service in the petroleum industry.

In gratitude for the exceptional education he received and understanding the value in educating future generations of students in the field of engineering, he established the Dr. Robert E. Carlile Scholarship for Petroleum Engineering in 1991 to provide financial support to petroleum engineering majors at TU.
