Lowell A. Simmons was a loyal alumnus of The University of Tulsa, who graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in management. He attended TU on the G. I. Bill, after having served in the U. S. Marines during World War II. Simmons earned a Purple Heart and a Gold Star in recognition of his efforts during the war. He launched a successful career in business management after his graduation, retiring in 1988 from Jones Truck Lines. Mr. Simmons passed away in 2011, and his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Junella Simmons, passed away in 2023.
Lowell and Junella shared a great affinity for TU, and they made several gifts to the university over the years, supporting the TU Annual Fund and programs in the business college.
In 2009, Cathey and Donald Humphreys, daughter and son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Simmons, wished to honor Cathey’s parents for their many achievements by establishing a scholarship fund at TU for the business students following in Mr. Simmons’ footsteps. Cathey and Donald made a generous gift to establish The Junella and Lowell A. Simmons Endowed Scholarship in Business. This need-based scholarship supports business students, with a preference for management and marketing majors.
The University of Tulsa is proud that our Junella and Lowell A. Simmons Scholars will be able to pursue their aspirations on our campus for generations to come while sustaining the legacies of an accomplished TU alumnus and his beloved wife.
