The late Charles O. Powell (BS ’50, Accounting) and Betty Jean Powell (BA ’50, Sociology) were proud alumni of The University of Tulsa, who continued to cheer for the Golden Hurricane long after they graduated. Their son, Charles R. “Randy” Powell (BA ’75, Political Science), upheld the family tradition and also earned a TU degree.

In 2005, Charles made the decision to help strengthen academic excellence and foster opportunity at his alma mater by creating two scholarship endowment funds through an estate gift. This gift commitment established the Betty Jean Powell Memorial Scholarship for Delta Delta Delta and the Charles O. and Betty Jean Powell Scholarship for Student-Athletes.

These scholarship endowments honor the interests of the Powells, since Betty Jean enjoyed her membership in Delta Delta Delta sorority, and Charles was a loyal Golden Hurricane fan.

The TU community is grateful for this philanthropic couple’s generous support of The University of Tulsa and the students who are following in their footsteps on TU’s campus.
